The wood becomes brittle and crumbly, almost like a dried sponge, and it can travel across masonry and brick to reach new timber. The dangerous part of dry rot is that it can advance inside the wood while the surface paint film still looks sound, so a painted beam or sill can be far more compromised than it appears.
Wet rot requires a persistent direct water source, such as a leak or standing water, and it stays localized to that source. Affected wood darkens and becomes soft and spongy rather than cubical and crumbly. It does not travel through masonry, and it will not spread to other members unless they are also exposed to direct moisture. In both cases, the paint can mask the problem. A sill or fascia may look fine from a distance while the wood underneath has begun to fail. This is why a screwdriver or awl pressed into suspect wood is the only reliable way to gauge how far decay has advanced, and why that probing is part of any honest assessment.
Termite and Beetle Damage, and How It Differs from Rot
Termite damage looks and behaves differently from fungal rot, and it is important to distinguish between them because the treatment paths are separate. Termites hollow wood from the inside, following the grain and often leaving a thin shell of sound-looking wood on the surface. They may also leave mud tubes on masonry or foundation walls as they travel between the soil and the wood. Wood-boring beetles, by contrast, create exit holes as they tunnel out of the wood, and they leave behind a fine sawdust-like residue called frass. In Minnesota's cold climate, termite pressure is minimal, so carpenter ant damage and wood-boring beetles are more common than true termite infestation. However, insect damage and fungal decay often occur together, because the same moisture that invites wood rot also attracts insects.

Trim that gives under thumb pressure or feels soft has likely absorbed water. A screwdriver pressed into fascia, a deck ledger, or the base of a door jamb will sink easily into decayed wood. Check doors and windows to see if they have become harder to close or if their frames have shifted. Walk across floors and note any soft spots, springiness, or areas that feel noticeably lower than others. In basements or crawl spaces, look for a musty smell, which often indicates sustained moisture even if you do not see standing water. Deck boards that flex more than they should, or that feel soft at their ends where they meet the ledger, are worth investigating.
All of these signs are worth noting, but they do not tell you how deep the problem goes. A painted surface can look completely sound while the wood beneath is significantly compromised. Conversely, a small soft spot on the surface may not extend far into the member. The only way to know is to probe the wood carefully or, in some cases, to open up a small section. A floor that has lost section in its joists or subfloor will feel bouncy or soft underfoot long before there is any danger of collapse. That bounce is your signal that something is wrong and worth investigating. Similarly, a deck ledger (the board that connects your deck to the house) carries half the deck's load, and it is the most critical connection in the entire structure. Water that gets behind the ledger causes decay that can compromise that connection and allow the deck to pull away from the house.

If the decay was caused by a roof leak that has since been fixed, or by a window that now has new flashing, the wood can dry out and the repair can hold. If the moisture source is still active, any repair is temporary and a waste of money.
In cases where the joist or beam has lost some section but still has solid core, sistering is a middle path. A sister member (a new piece of the same size and grade) is fastened alongside the damaged member to restore stiffness and load capacity. This works well for floor joists and is often cheaper than full replacement because you avoid the cost of opening up and removing the old member. Epoxy consolidants have a narrow and real use on non-structural trim, baseboards, or casing where the piece is worth saving for its profile or finish. These products harden decayed wood so it can be sealed and painted, but they do not restore structural capacity and should never be used under load. A good carpenter will quote both repair and replacement options where both are honest choices, and will explain the trade-off in cost, disruption, and longevity. Sometimes repair is the right answer.
